Service your car regularly…
According to manufacturer’s schedule, using the best quality oil for the engine that you can buy.
Ask the garage what oil they are putting in… Compare this with your Owner’s Manual specification.
Ask the garage for a note on what, if any maintenance will become due before it’s next Service.
Just because all is okay during the service, does not mean it will be the case in 6 months time, when the weather has changed, putting the car under a different set of extremities.
Attend to these issues as they become due.
How are your Brakes, Tyres and Suspension?
These can be overlooked when all the emphasis has gone into keeping the engine in top shape… But neglecting the drive train (brakes, tyres, suspension and transmission) can create another set of problems.
Aim for a “whole car” Full service and check up at least once every two years.
Overheating!!!
Caused by burst pipes, faulty cooling system parts and incorrect or insufficient antifreeze (Required in all climate’s) in the system.
- Mainly in the Summer
- On long journeys
- In slow moving traffic
Keep your engine at the right temperature by renewing brittle, soft or misshapen hoses. And, have the right antifreeze content in the cooling system… Doing the aforementioned will prolong the life of the cooling system and its components.
Engine/emissions warning lamps. Arrgh!
What a pain. Especially when they trip the car into ‘limp home’ mode.
But what they really do is safeguard your engine. Treat them as such and get your car checked out.
You might be amazed to find that following the previous four steps will reduce the occurrence of engine warning lights... Especially frequent oil changes.
